Important Dates in Indonesian History

1610: The Dutch build a small port in what is now Jakarta (see map).
 
1682: The Dutch now control all trade in Indonesia.
 
1799: Control of Indonesia is transferred to the Dutch government.
 
1912: The Nationalist movement begins.
 
1942: The Japanese occupy Dutch colonies, including Indonesia.
 
1945: The war ends and control of Indonesia is returned to the Dutch.

1949: The Netherlands officially recognizes Indonesia as an independent state.

1959: President Sukarno implements his Guided Democracy program.

1965: General Suharto manages to quell an attempted coup d'etat.

1968: General Suharto becomes president.
