The Nationalism Movement began in 1912 with the formation of the Islamic Union, which began as a group that protected Muslims. Eventually it grew to a membership of two million. Until World War One, the Dutch were accomadating. After that, they began to be more constrictive with their legal system.
The Islamic Union was a major start for the Nationalism movement, even though few of the leaders of the movement were Islamic.
The Indonesian Nationalist Party was started by Sukarno in 1927. Although Sukarno was exiled twice and the PNI was officially prohibited, the movement continued to grow at a rapid pace.
After World War One, the Indonesians gained their independence and Sukarno became president.
